Team USA collegiate roster includes UVA's Abbott

DURHAM, N.C. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Andrew Abbott will officially be the latest Virginia baseball player to represent his country this summer.

The rising junior left-hander is one of 26 players on the roster for the USA Baseball Collegiate National team, which opens a five-game series against Cuba on Tuesday, then travels to Taiwan and Japan next week. Abbott struck out two of the three batters he faced in his lone relief appearance during Team USA's Red vs. Blue training camp series.

Abbott has appeared in 48 games for the Wahoos the past two seasons, compiling a 5-7 record and nine saves with a 3.51 ERA in 95 innings pitched. He has struck out 137 batters and walked 41, with just five home runs allowed.

Abbott is the ninth UVA player all-time to make the Team USA roster, and the third in the past five summers, joining Matt Thaiss in 2015 and Jake McCarthy in 2017. UVA head coach Brian O'Connor served as pitching coach for the collegiate national team last summer.
