UVA reveals lineup for Saturday's Welsh tribute

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- George Welsh's former players and colleagues will gather at John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday morning to share their memories of the former Virginia football coach.

The 85-year-old Welsh passed away on January 2. When he retired in 2000, Welsh was the winningest coach in ACC history. The four-time ACC coach of the year went 134-86-3 in 19 seasons leading the Wahoos.

Saturday's tribute event will begin at 10 a.m., with admission and parking both free to the public. The lineup of speakers includes a panel of a half-dozen of Welsh's former UVA players, led by Ronde Barber -- Nick Merrick, Shawn Moore, Sean Scott, Anthony Poindexter and Chris Slade are the others -- as well as longtime UVA assistant Tom O'Brien and current head coach Bronco Mendenhall.

Former Navy kicker and UVA graduate assistant Bob Tata Jr. and former Penn State football players Franco Harris, Lydell Mitchell and Charlie Pittman will also speak, and two of Welsh's children, Adam and Kate Welsh, will also give remarks. The event will be hosted by Washington Post columnist John Feinstein.
