CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Virginia will be ranked sixth in the country when the Wahoos open the season at Loyola on February 9.
All five ACC teams were in the top 14 of the 2019 preseason coaches poll that was released on Monday. That No. 6 ranking is the highest for UVA to open the year since the 2012 team entered the season ranked No. 1 in the country.
UVA is coming off a 12-6 season in 2018 that included some milestones for the program in Lars Tiffany's second season. The Wahoos snapped an 18-game losing streak in ACC play with a win at North Carolina on April 7. UVA reached the title game of the ACC tournament in the program's first appearance in that bracket since 2013. And Virginia made the NCAA Tournament field for the first time in three seasons, losing to Loyola in the first round.
The Greyhounds are ranked fourth in the 2019 preseason media poll. They're one of four upcoming UVA opponents in the preseason top 10, along with Duke (No. 2), Johns Hopkins (No. 7) and Notre Dame (No. 10). Syracuse (No. 11) and North Carolina (No. 14) round out the ACC teams in the preseason rankings.
