Virginia tops defending national champions JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- (8) Virginia goes on the road to pick up a win over defending national champions (7) James Madison 14-9.

After the game was tied at 3-3, the Wahoos scored five straight goals to hold an 8-4 advantage at halftime. The Virginia defense prevented back-to-back goals by the Dukes in the second half as they built up their lead to win 14-9.

The loss avenges last loss in the NCAA Tournament second round on the same field to JMU, who went on to win the national championship.

The Cavaliers were lead by Avery Shoemaker with five goals, as well as Lillie Kloak with four goals. Sammy Mueller had five assists to lead Virginia on the night.

The Wahoos return home on Saturday to host Duke in an ACC matchup.
