CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Starter Evan Sperling and three Virginia relievers combined to strike out 15 in a two-hit 9-0 shutout of VMI in the Cavaliers' home opener on Tuesday.
Sperling struck out nine and gave up one hit in four innings of work. He struck out the side in the second inning, and also got inning-ending strikeouts to escape bases-loaded jams in both the first and fourth.
Freshman Zach Messinger (1-0) picked up the win in relief in his college debut, striking out five and giving up the Keydets' other hit in three innings. Blake Bales and Chesdin Harrington each pitched an inning to complete the Cavaliers' shutout.
UVA (1-3) scored its nine runs on just six hits, and did all of its damage at the plate during a four-run first inning and a five-run fifth. Nate Eikhoff's two-out double -- that was almost caught by a diving Cody Warner in left field -- drove in three and capped the scoring in the first inning. In the fifth, UVA got a two-run double from Tanner Morris, then back-to-back two-out RBI doubles from Brendan Rivoli and Alex Tappen.
Rivoli also had a first-inning sacrifice fly to finish with a pair of RBI. Morris, Tappen and freshman leadoff hitter Zack Gelof all scored twice.
