CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Virginia has a history of success in postseason bowl games in Charlotte. The Cavaliers will get a chance to add to that history later this month in the Belk Bowl.
UVA will face South Carolina in this year’s Belk Bowl, the game’s organizers announced Sunday afternoon. The Gamecocks finished the regular season 7-5, including a 4-4 record in SEC play.
It’s the second straight postseason bowl appearance and the 20th all-time for the UVA football program, which went 7-5 during the regular season in Bronco Mendenhall’s third year as head coach. Virginia has lost its last three bowl appearances, with the program’s last win coming against Minnesota in the 2005 Music City Bowl.
The Belk Bowl will be played at Bank of America Stadium at noon on Dec. 29 and will be televised on ABC16.
UVA is 2-0 all-time in the Belk Bowl, with both wins coming when the game was known as the Continental Tire Bowl.
Wali Lundy scored four total touchdowns to lead the Wahoos to a 48-22 win over West Virginia in the inaugural Continental Tire Bowl in 2002. The following year, Matt Schaub threw for a touchdown and Lundy added another rushing score in a 23-16 UVA victory over Pitt.
Virginia is 13-20-1 all-time against the Gamecocks. The two programs haven’t met since a 31-7 South Carolina win in 2003.
