CHARLOTTE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Virginia director of athletics Carla Williams made it clear when she took the job that getting the football program back to prominance was a priority.
A year after taking the job with the Cavaliers, Virginia is preparing to play in the Belk Bowl, a postseason destination Williams knows well.
"I was very fortunate to be in this bowl as a participant four years ago," Williams said.
That was a 37-14 Georgia win in 2014. The Cavaliers missed postseason play that year and the next two years before playing in the Military Bowl last season, shortly after Williams was hired at Virginia.
After that loss, head coach Bronco Mendenhall made it clear, playing in a bowl game was not good enough any more. Williams echoed that statement at Thursday's final practice.
"You want to see these markers where you're getting better," she said. "So not being in a bowl game three years ago and losing in the bowl game last year and having a chance to really compete and win a bowl game this year is something that both he and I are really looking forward to."
