Charlottesville Man Honored Among 2015 CNN Heroes Top Ten

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (NEWSPLEX) -- CNN's Anderson Cooper has selected a Charlottesville man as one of his Top Ten CNN Heroes for 2015.

Sean Gobin is a U.S. Marine veteran who is using his experience in the military and hiking to help other combat veterans.

He created a nonprofit, Warrior Hike, that helps veterans connect with nature and process the issues they face by "walking off the war" on the Appalachian Trail.

This is the ninth year for CNN Heroes, which celebrates individuals for making extraordinary contributions to help improve the lives of other people.

Among the other 2015 honorees in another Virginia resident, Bhagwati Agrawal of Vienna, whose organization created a rainwater harvesting system that provides water for 10,000 people in drought-stricken villages in India.

Kim Carter of San Bernardino, California helps homeless women reclaim their lives; Maggie Doyne of Mendham, New Jersey helps care for and educate children in Nepal; Jody Farley-Berens of Scottsdale, Arizona helps single mothers who are battling cancer; Daniel Ivankovich of Glenview, Illinois has helped treat thousands of uninsured or underinsured patients in Chicago's troubled neighborhoods; Richard Joyner of Conetoe, North Carlonia encourages young people to grow fresh food every year; Monique Pool of Suriname rescues, rehabilitates and releases sloths and other animals to the rainforest; Rochelle Ripley of Glastonbury, Connecticut provides health care and education opportunities to the Lakota people of South Dakota; and Jim Withers of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania brings medical care to the homeless on Pittsburgh's streets.

Each of these people will be given $10,000 and they now have the opportunity to get another $100,000 through public voting.

People can vote online through Nov. 15 to pick their hero.

As part of their award package, each Hero will also get free organizational training from the Annenberg Foundation, through the Annenberg Alchemy program that offers guidance to help strengthen organiations for long-term success.

The winner will be announced on the CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute telecast Dec. 6 at 8 p.m.
