Charlottesville company wins Best New Food award at expo

RICHMOND, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- A local company was recognized Wednesday at the Virginia Food and Beverage Expo.

Gearharts Fine Chocolates of Charlottesville was given the Best New Product Overall award for its Virginia Malt Whiskey Truffles.

The event was sponsored by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to help connect buyers representing grocery stores, restaurants and gifts shops with specialty foods and beverages made in the Commonwealth.

Mother Shrub from Midlothian won the Best New Product Overall award and Best New Beverage went to Texas Beach of Richmond.

VDACS reports there were a record number of entries for the three awards at this event, with 63.

A panel of judges including chefs and food writers evaluated the entries on originality, taste and aroma, creative packaging, visual appeal and presentation.

It was also a record year for the number of exhibitors, with 160 from all across Virginia being there.

This expo is held every two years.
