City, County School Board Members Seeking End to SOLs

Dec. 2, 2013

Officials with Charlottesville and Albemarle County public schools are requesting an end to the standards of learning tests (SOL).

The two school systems say they'll ask the State Board of Education to stop the testing. Dozens of other school systems across the state support a resolution to halt the SOLs.

Charlottesville School Board members say the testing doesn't accurately measure how well students are learning, and wastes valuable classroom time.

"The weeks before kind of prepare for them, and then the week of the test, it's just that time could be better spend doing some project -based learning, or their regular work assignment,” Charlottesville School Board Chair Juandiego Wade said. “These tests just require so much time, energy and effort."

Members hope to have the resolution to the Department of Education by the end of the year.
