City Leaders Sign Distracted Driving Pledge

April 19, 2012

Charlottesville leaders are taking a stand against distracted driving.

Fire Chief Charles Werner joined other city leaders Thursday morning on the Downtown Mall to sign a proclamation making April "Distracted Driving Awareness Month."

The group is hoping the measure will remind people to focus on the road while driving and to avoid texting and putting on makeup behind the wheel.

"What used to be yesterday's DUI, distracted driving is just as big a problem today," said local attorney Greg Webb.

Experts estimate around 80 percent of all vehicle crashes are caused by distracted driving.
