CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- Friday marked the 16th Annual Emily Couric Leadership Luncheon and featured guest speaker Nikki Giovanni.

The famed poet, activist and educator was also the recipient of the 2016 Leadership Award.

Along with Giovanni, ten other local female students were recognized.

Eight nominees received $5,000 scholarships while a merit finalist received a $10,000 scholarship.

This year, Olivia Vande Woude, a senior at St. Anne's-Belfield School, won the $30,000 annual Emily Couric Leadership Scholarship.

"I'm just so proud to be here," she said. "I'm so proud to be associated with Emily Couric, a woman that just did so much in Virginia and beyond for health, education, and civic responsibility issues. It's just an absolute honor and I'm so grateful to be here."

Vande Woude said, as a long-time fan and poet herself, she was honored to hear Giovanni speak.

She will attend the College of William and Mary in the fall and hopes to pursue a career in international affairs or law.
