Man Crashes Motorcycle, Gets Stranded in Ravine Overnight

September 4, 2013

Albemarle County Police are looking into a motorcycle accident that left the driver seriously injured and stranded overnight.

Police say they do not yet know the cause of the crash but believe the accident happened on Tuesday.

The driver was found Wednesday afternoon in a ravine on Route 20 near Carter's Mountain Road.

For hours, people passed by the injured biker because neither he or his motorcycle could be seen from the road.

On Tuesday night, police were alerted that the driver did not return home. Though police had an active missing persons case for the driver, they were not the ones to find him.

"It was actually a friend who knew his path and knew that he hadn't been seen and was missing at the time who actually got out of the car, was walking along the path and then saw the marks and was able to locate the motorcycle and his friend," said Carter Johnson with the Albemarle County Police Department.

A crash reconstruction team was at the site on Wednesday working to piece together what happened and just how long the driver was in the ravine.

Johnson says the driver is in critical condition but stable at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
