CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (NEWSPLEX) -- Pearl Certification works much like a Carfax report but for a house.
The company verifies home energy efficiency and helps appraisers, buyers and homeowners identify how much money home improvements are actually worth at the point of sale.
The company wants to help homeowners who've already made improvements like upgrading heating and cooling equipment, windows and insulation cash in once they sell their home.
The company is also hoping to encourage owners see the value in making their home energy efficient now in order to reap the benefits down the road.
Until now, homeowners haven't had an official documented way to take credit for energy efficient improvements when they sale their home.
"Much like Carfax for used cars, you need a verified data set from a technical expert and independent third party to be able to present that information to others involved in the real estate transaction and that's what we do, " said Cynthia Adams, CEO of Pearl Certification.
Albemarle County and city representatives attended Monday's launch in order to support an effort that could help the city win a $5 million Georgetown University energy prize.
