Jesse Matthew left a Galveston, TX jail Friday afternoon in a black Chevy Tahoe. He is en route to a Houston airport, where he will board a plane and eventually return to Charlottesville.
Matthew, who is charged with abducting University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, has been in the Galveston jail since Wednesday. On Thursday, he opted not to fight extradition, clearing the way for Virginia officials to bring him home.
Matthew was arrested on a beach on the Bolivar Peninsula on Wednesday after a woman recognized him from news coverage about Graham's disappearance.
CBS19's Dan Schutte visited the peninsula Friday morning and reports it is not an easy place to get to. It is very remote, with a long stretch of beach that goes on for miles. Because you can camp on the beach without a permit, locals say it isn't unusual to see unfamiliar faces staying on the beach.
It is not yet known exactly when Matthew will arrive in Charlottesville. The Galveston sheriff won't confirm if Matthew will fly on a commercial or private flight.
We do know, it will likely be several days before he faces a judge on the charge of abduction with intent to defile. Because of a statewide judicial conference, the Charlottesville General District Court will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
