CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (NEWSPLEX) -- The Virginia Association of REALTORS has begun a year-long sponsorship of Homes for Our Troops.
VAR gave the nonprofit a donation of more than $61,000, including $2,500 from the Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS.
HFOT is a national organization that builds mortgage-free homes for severely injured post-9/11 veterans, some of whom have suffered multiple amputations, paralysis, blindness or traumatic brain injury.
Members of VAR's 2015 Leadership Academy selected HFOT as a class project to emphasize the role REALTORS can have on the lives of their neighbors.
"A home is more than walls and roof, it is a place to heal, to grow, to comment," said 2015 VAR President Deborah Baisden. "We are dedicated to finding each family the right place to live, especially these heroes."
According to a release, nearly ten percent of the eight million people who call Virginia home are veterans or members of the Armed Services.
HFOT has completed almost 200 homes for severely injured veterans in the past ten years.
