St. Anne's-Belfield recognized 2008 graduate, Kyle Long, during halftime over Friday night's game. Long is a current offensive tackle for the Chicago Bears NFL football team.
While at STAB, Long wore jersey number 58. Long also wore number 9 for a short period of his senior year, due to a position change. But, number 58 is his retired number. Long was a three-time all-state and all-conference player during his time as a Saint. He was also selected as a U.S. Army All-American in 2007 and invited to play in the Bowl.
Long played college ball at the University of Oregon, before being drafter by the Bears in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. In 2014 Long earned a spot in the Pro Bowl. He also was named to the Pro Football Focus' All-Rookie Team and NFL.com's All-Rookie team, in 2014.
"It is really awesome to be back. So much has changed here at Saint Anne's in terms of new buildings and new people, but the one thing that has stayed the same is the Friday night atmosphere here. Coach Blake is still here so that is a good thing. When you are talking about where you went to school and Charlottesville, when I say STAB I can pump my chest out a little bit because we had a lot of success here. Some of my favorite memories come from this field. It is really great to be back and to be able to talk to the younger guys and the next generation of STAB players," said Long.
"Well it is always awesome having guys back, but you know Kyle was such a big influence on this program and such a great player. Obviously he is a great player now. You know it is just so awesome having him here, having our guys experience, being able to talk to Kyle and know that he has been in their shoes," said football coach, John Blake. "It was fun for the guys, it was fun for me, I think Kyle enjoyed it just a great night for us."
