ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Young girls in Albemarle County explored different STEM topics and careers as part of Girls' Geek Day at Meriwether Lewis Elementary School on Saturday.

Several groups of girls rotated through different workshops about robots, microscopes, and other STEM projects as part of the outreach program hosted by Tech-Girls, a nonprofit dedicated to sparking interest in elementary school-aged girls about science, technology, engineering and math with interactive activities.

Kim Wilkens, the founder of Tech-Girls, said their programs are important to inspire girls to follow the career paths they want to pursue.

"There's definitely a problem that the older they get of going up against stereotypes and other reasons they may not want to get into STEM," said Wilkens. "So the reason we have Girls' Geek Day to really spark their interest in a lot of different ways."

There will be another Girls' Geek Day at St. Anne's-Belfield on Feb. 15. For more information about this event, you can click here.
