Kaine says war powers resolution has votes to pass Senate
WASHINGTON (CBS19 NEWS) -- U.S. Senator Tim Kaine says his war powers resolution has the votes it needs to pass.
Under the bill, the President of the United States would have to go through Congress before escalating any conflict with Iran.
Kaine says after the way the current administration handled the strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, Republicans came to him and they worked out a solution together.
"They were discouraged. What was being communicated to us is that Congress is an annoyance," said Kaine. "Why do you want to know, we don't have to tell you anything, you should be glad six days later to give you a few morsels of information. So after that, they came to me to make amendments to earn the support of Senators Lee and Paul, and Senators Young and Collins."
The War Powers Act would only need a simple majority to pass the Senate. A similar version of the bill has already passed the U.S. House.
