ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS 19 NEWS) -- It was a big night for some officers from Albemarle County as they were honored for their hard work in the community during the 25th annual Albemarle County Police Department Foundation awards.

The foundation highlights the work many on the force are doing every day to keep Albemarle County safe, but also engaging the community to build stronger relationships between the public and the police department.

Police Chief Ron Lantz said he is looking for more than just law-enforcement officers.

" I'm looking for people who can do community policing that want to engage with the community and not just go out and do the day to day operations and do that extra thing." Chief Lantz said.

Eagle award winner Detective Jordan Weethee said he feels his work helps transform lives.

"I just think there are so many different opportunities on a daily basis to make changes on such a small level or that is perceived on our end but could affect people in drastic ways and that's always very rewarding," Weethee said.

The foundation also provides scholarships, housing assistance, equipment,  training, and professional development.
