CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- When Joe Reed heard his name called in the fifth round of the NFL Draft, he became the first Virginia receiver drafted since his receivers coach Marques Hagans in 2006, something he wrote down when he first arrived at UVA.

With every pick announced the suspense only built for Joe Reed until he got that one phone call.

"Almost hard to explain, just the anticipation, the waiting, being with my family and friends and finally the phone started ringing," Reed said, "I looked down and I looked up saw that L.A. had a pick."

Reed was drafted by the Chargers with the 151st pick in this past weekend's NFL Draft. Now the Charlotte Courthouse kid who has never been further west than Louisiana is headed to Los Angeles.

"Honestly throughout this process I've been telling people, they were asking if I had to pick where I want to go, I was like L.A." Reed said, "So I'm very excited to get out there, view the change of scenery and start working."

For now the timing of Reed's move out west is in limbo with NFL facilities still closed and the usual rookie minicamps that would take place over the next few weeks up in the air.

"It kind of sucks just waiting around, not being able to just hop on a flight and go to my new home," Reed said, "Everything is over the computer, phone calls, Zoom, Facetime, just talking to coaches that way. By the end of this week we'll have a better idea of what to expect."

When Reed finally arrives in L.A. he will have his hands full with coaches expecting him to take reps at receiver, running back and on special teams.

"Being able to play multiple positions and knowing the fact that L.A. they believe in me and they see me continuing to do those types of roles for their team is very exciting to me," Reed said.

Reed also joins the Chargers just as they plan to open the brand new SoFi Stadium and says he's excited to build up a new fanbase.

"Stadium, uniforms, just getting a new fanbase and the fact that I can be a part of this rebuilding for the Chargers means a lot to me," Reed said, who will also join former UVA receiver Darius Jennings on the Chargers, "Especially getting the fans out there and creating a decent culture."
