CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- People parking in the parking garages on Water and Market streets can now use their phones to pay.

According to a release, the ParkMobile app can be used to pay for the two parking garages near the Downtown Mall.

The app is available on iPhone and Android devices, and it can be accessed on a mobile web browser if people do not want to download the app.

“Charlottesville is very happy to now offer contactless parking payments,” said Rick Siebert, the city Parking Manager. “By partnering with ParkMobile, we are providing a new option for our residents and visitors to pay for parking.”

The release says in order to pay through the app, users will enter the zone number posted on the signs at the entrance of the garages.

They then scan the ticket they get upon entering and again when they leave.

People can also make a parking reservation for one of the garages, or use the app/website service to search for parking that is available.

After booking a parking spot, the user will be able to enter their selected garage with either a mobile pass in the app or with a printed ParkMobile entrance ticket.

ParkMobile has more than 23 million users across the country and is already used in several cities across the Commonwealth.

The service already accepts contactless payments on the West Second Street Lot and some University of Virginia parking facilities as well as some privately-owned parking lots in the city.

The release says people can now use the ParkMobile app to see all the locations in Charlottesville where parking is available through this service.

It adds that monthly parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Water Street garage.

The current rate is $135 per month for unlimited parking 24/7. For more information, call Lanier Parking at (434) 284-5620.
