ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Albemarle County Police Department handed out 76 tickets during its distracted driving enforcement initiative on Tuesday.

Officers were on primary roadways targeting distracted driving infractions from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The police department is working to keep the roads safe.

“Unfortunately, Albemarle County roads are some of the most dangerous in the Commonwealth,” said Chief Ron Lantz in a news release. “Our department is committed to reducing crashes through a combination of public education campaigns, community engagement, and enforcement initiatives.”

Cell phone use is a major factor in distracted driving.

So far this year, more than 300 tickets have been handed out to drivers for using their hand-held devices while driving in Albemarle County.
