ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- An organization that wants to make sure children have all they need to succeed in school is looking for some help from the community.

Families Helping Families aims to assist Albemarle County children reach their academic and social potential.

According to a release, the organization is looking to collect donations to address the needs of area schools, parents and caregivers, and members of the community.

FHF, which was created earlier this year, has launched a holiday giving campaign.

"We say we're a village, but a lot of us don't even know our neighbors. FHF can help make those relationships visible and effective," said Emily Holmstrom, Agnor-Hurt counselor.

The release says that in its first year, FHF has helped dozens of families across Albemarle County by paying for tutoring, providing beds, and supporting grassroots organizations that support families.

“This holiday season marks FHF’s one-year anniversary. In the coming year, we’re hoping to raise even more funds to be able to meet an increasing number of requests for emergency needs,” said FHF co-organizer Amanda Alger. “Mental health and transportation are two key needs that come up again and again.”

FHF's fund is managed by the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. Donations are tax-deductible.
