ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A dog with a rare health condition will live to see the new year thanks to the help of animal lovers in the community.

Genevieve entered the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA as a scared stray. She would only leave her crate to use the bathroom.

And that was when the shelter's staff realized something was wrong. They realized she was in too much pain to move.

Genevieve needed special surgery, shaving parts of her hip so it would better fit in the joint.

Thanks to community support for the animal shelter, the veterinarians and staff were able to save the dog.

"We're very lucky that we have very skilled veterinarians and an incredible staff," said Moriah Good, CASPCA spokesperson. "But all of that cost money. And your support makes it possible for us to do specialized surgeries for animals that come to us needing it."

Not only does Genevieve have a new pep in her step, she has also found a forever family with whom she will begin the new year.

CASPCA is also holding a 50K in five days fundraiser this week. As of Thursday, it has reached $43,000.

The shelter says all of the money will go to help animals like Genevieve.
