CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The University of Virginia Health System reports it currently has the highest number of COVID-19 patients it has seen since the pandemic began.

The health system has 114 COVID patients as of Friday, of whom 36 are in ICU and six are pediatric patients.

UVA Health's CEO Dr. Wendy Horton says the Omicron variant of the virus plays a big role in the uptick in positive cases.

"Over the last week or so, we're seeing a little bit of a difference in that we're treating both COVID patients that have traditional COVID symptoms, and then also asymptomatic patients that could be coming in for both medical or surgical reasons, and then found out that they are COVID positive," she said.

Dr. Costi Sifri says the state's rate for positive cases is slowing down but is still very high. He says UVA Health is predicting the surge will come to an end by the end of January.
