RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Tax filing season will be getting underway in Virginia next week.

Virginia Tax says taxpayers can start filing their state and federal individual income tax returns on Jan. 24.

According to a release, electronic filing increased by two percent last year, which allows for returns to be filed quickly.

The department says electronically filed returns can typically be processed within two weeks, but mailed returns can take up to eight weeks, or longer, to be processed.

Virginians who earned $73,000 or less in 2021 are eligible to file their taxes for free online here.

The release says people can create a secure, self-service account to track their return or refund.

Additionally, make sure any banking information is correct because direct deposits can be rejected if something is wrong. This happened more than 16,000 times last year.
