CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- More than 200 people have signed a petition regarding mask mandates at a local private school.

The petition on was created by parents of students at the Covenant School.

It’s asking the school’s leaders to reconsider its position regarding optional masking while in the school’s buildings.

Parents received an email on Friday stating the school would be following Governor Glenn Youngkin’s executive order regarding masks.

The petition says private schools are not bound by these kinds of executive orders unless there is a declared state of emergency in Virginia.

The state of emergency that was issued for the COVID-19 pandemic has expired.

The petition also calls for the strengthening of other mitigation strategies if masks are no longer required.
