CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- An event coming up on Friday aims to help people in need of bone marrow transplants.

The Yellow Door Foundation has teamed up with Be the Match to raise awareness about the need for stem cell donors, as well as the ease to register.

When a person, especially a child, is diagnosed with cancer and requires an organ transplant, the entire family is impacted by trying to find the best treatments possible.

This may mean relocating for an extended period, and the Yellow Door Foundation provides free lodging and family support while they are in Charlottesville if they come here.

According to a release, many of the children and families served by YDF can benefit from stem cell transplants.

A stem cell transplant can be used to cure blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma as well as other blood diseases like anemias.

The Friday event will be collecting self-administered cheek swabs to be added to the Be the Match registry. No stem cells will be collected.

It will take palace from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside of the Ragged Mountain Running Shop on the University of Virginia Corner.

People who cannot attend the event but still want to submit a swab can text YDF to 61474 to get a registry kit in the mail.

Anyone between the ages of 18 and 40 can register.
