CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- It may be a while before a decision is announced regarding the fate of Charlottesville’s statue of Robert E. Lee.

At a hearing on Wednesday, attorneys argued about whether a lawsuit against the city and the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center could move forward.

Two bidders who wanted to take possession of the statue filed the lawsuit after it was announced that the statue would go to the Jefferson School, which plans to melt it down and create a new piece of art.

The plaintiffs say state law prevents the statue from being melted down.

The judge said he needed more time to make a decision following the hearing on Wednesday.
