CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The meals tax in Charlottesville will be going up a little bit.

The Charlottesville City Council voted to increase the tax by half a percent, up 6.5 percent.

Earlier this week, the council also voted to increase the real estate tax by one cent per $100 of assessed value.

These changes are expected to add about $2 million in annual revenue, which will be used for the renovation and restructuring of Buford Middle School as well as future public housing projects.

These increases will go into effect on July 1.
