Madison County dog recovering from multiple gunshot wounds
MADISON COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A Madison County woman is calling for legal action after she claims her neighbor committed a brutal act against a 15-month-old chocolate Labrador.
“He heard five gunshots go off and saw Pluto bolt through our yard, bleeding, a lot,” said Fallon Braun.
Earlier this month, she received a text message from her neighbor that was troubling after she had told him his dog, Pluto, was in her yard. The message read, "I'll put him down when I get home.”
“I chalked it up to it being a typo because, well, who would do something like that,” said Braun.
But just hours later, she received an urgent call from her boyfriend.
“He was very out of breath and was like call Animal Control right now,” Braun said.
Braun says her boyfriend saw Pluto running through their yard, bleeding. Right behind Pluto was his owner who she says came around the house with a gun in his hand, wanting to know where the dog went.
After hours of looking for Pluto, Braun says they found the 15-month-old pup with three gunshot wounds, one to the top of his head, one in the shoulder and one in the jaw.
“It was upsetting. However, I was just very happy to see him alive,” she said.
Pluto is now recovering at the Madison County Animal Shelter and a GoFundMe has raised more than $3,000 to cover the cost of his medical care, including surgeries.
Braun says the shooting is inexcusable but at least Pluto is expected to recover.
“I know that there is a very extensive list of people that are interested in giving him a good home,” she said.
Commonwealth Attorney Clarissa Barry she said the office is investigating but made no additional statement because it could taint a potential jury pool if the case gets to that point.
Pluto's owner did not respond to a request for comment.
