CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (CBS19 Sports) -- Former Virginia tight end Jelani Woods heard his name called in the third round of the NFL Draft, selected 73rd overall by the Indianapolis Colts.

The 6'7" tight end was the second overall tight end selected in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Woods is the highest drafted Virginia tight end since Heath Miller in 2005, and first tight end from the program since 2009. He is also the highest overall Virginia draft pick since Juan Thornhill in 2019.

In his one season at Virginia after transferring from Oklahoma State, Woods was named First-Team All-ACC with eight touchdowns, the first among his position group in the conference.

The reaction to the draft selection was positive from ESPN: “The Colts land one of the most exciting players in the entire class thanks to his combination of speed, height and length. Woods fills a huge position of need for new quarterback Matt Ryan."
