CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Over the course of 2021, Sentara Healthcare invested a combined $254 million in Virginia and North Carolina communities.

In the Charlottesville area, the majority of the money went toward charitable care, community grants and education programs.

Kimberly Skelly, President and Executive Director of the Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation, says this kind of community outreach is what the nonprofit is all about.

“Our mission is not to make money, it's to serve our communities," she said. "The communities in which we work and so that is our mission, to make health better every day and that's for the entire community and that's how we judge our success.”

Sentara is also partnering with Cultivate Charlottesville to rebuild community gardens.
