AFTON, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Virginia chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, or ASCE, rededicated Crozet’s Blue Ridge Tunnel on Saturday.

The tunnel was first dedicated in 1964, but the plaque was lost.

So the ASCE decided to rededicate the tunnel for its centennial year.

What makes the tunnel so unique is that it was completed in 1858 and is more than 4,000 feet long, made it one of the longest tunnels at that time.

"Nelson County opening the trail is a perfect opportunity to interface with the public, so they understand more about civil engineering," said Bernie Dennis, a retired civil engineer.

The Crozet Tunnel is one of the only seven ASCE Virginia landmarks.
