CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- With gas prices climbing, more people are turning to bikes.

People are looking for a cheaper way to get around, and Community Bikes in Charlottesville has been busy as a result.

Employees at the nonprofit bike shop are seeing a higher demand for bikes and repairs on top of what was already an increase in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite there being more interest, Community Bikes says it has the supply to meet the demand.

"Just come into the shop and talk to us,” said Kyle Rodland, the program manager at Community Bikes. “Everything that we have in the shop is a donation, so we don't really control our inventory. So come and see us. We might have something that fits, and it's usually at a very affordable price."

The nonprofit gives bikes away and accepts donated bikes that can then go back out to help someone else in the community.

It also accepts any and all bike parts.

In Virginia, the average price per gallon of gas is currently $4.77, which is below the national average of nearly $5.
