ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Albemarle County Police Department says it is getting reports about a phone scam in the area.

According to police, someone is calling area residents and impersonating either an ACPD officer or a member of the Albemarle County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone who gets an unsolicited call or message should never give out personally identifiable information.

The name and/or number people may see on their caller ID or cell phone can be falsified in a process called spoofing.

In order to check, people should call back on a number they know is genuine to verify that the call is actually coming from the agency.

ACPD also reminds residents that it will not call anyone to solicit money.

Scams can be reported on the police department’s non-emergency line at (434) 977-9041.
