Political expert says those who need to watch the Jan. 6 hearings likely won't
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Political analysts and journalists are set to talk about the importance of the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection hearings, which will air in a prime time slot on CBS19 on Thursday night.
But experts say those who need to watch the hearings probably will not.
With the recent mass shootings, the rise in inflation, and the war in Ukraine, it seems like the events of Jan. 6, 2021 are far away and may pale in comparison. But Dr. Larry Sabato with the University of Virginia Center for Politics says we can't let that be the case.
On Wednesday night, a UVA Center for Politics panel will preview the public hearings on the investigation into the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Sabato will host the panel, joined by top analysts and journalists.
He says both Republicans and Democrats need to watch the hearings because he calls that day America's first real coup attempt. And he hopes the hearings can hold those responsible for those events accountable.
But he says conservatives are unlikely to care.
"I'm afraid that Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents will be 90 percent of the audience," said Sabato. "There's only one news company not airing the hearing, FOX. And that tells you all you need to know."
Sabato adds that he believes former President Donald Trump helped plan and orchestrate the events leading up to the Capitol attack and he believes that will become clear during the hearings.
The Wednesday event will feature a panel moderated by former U.S. Director of Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency Chris Krebs.
