CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- There is a new Deputy Chief of Community Risk Reduction at the Charlottesville Fire Department.

According to a release, Michael L. Thomas started working Tuesday.

He has more than 30 years of experience with fire and EMS service.

CRR is focused on community partnerships, public engagement, and strategic decision-making through risk assessments.

The release says it also includes accreditation and internal affairs as well as ISO rating, the Fire Marshal's Office, technology, planning and analysis, FOIA and public information.

He has taken over for Joe Phillips, who was sworn in in late April as the city’s new fire marshal.
