RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Emptying out your car and avoiding idling are just some ideas AAA is passing along to help people save some cash.

Morgan Dean with AAA Mid-Atlantic says the high gas prices are going to be around for a while.

So if you're looking to save, he suggests finding discounts using apps, putting the windows down when possible, using cruise control, consolidating trips, and cleaning out your car.

"If you're doing your daily driving, you have items in your car that you don't need right now, maybe some sports equipment back from the fall or something else that you put in your car," said Dean. "Get that out of your car. it may not seem like a lot of weight, but that's more power and more of that gas that your vehicle is using to move that around."

Checking the pressure in the tires can also help people get a few more miles per gallon.

These are just a few things to think about before your summer trips, and saving a couple of miles per gallon here and there can result in noticeable differences.
