CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- The high school football season is nearly two months away with a few key games in Central Virginia highlighting the 2022 VHSL Master Schedule.

Defending co-Jefferson District champions Albemarle kick off the season locally with a trip to Harrisonburg on Thursday, August 25. The rest of the high school schedule picks up on Friday, August 26 with the return of Friday Night Endzone and a week one Jefferson District matchup with co-Jefferson District champions Western Albemarle visiting Charlottesville.

Week four sees the return of one of the area's most heated rivalries with William Monroe traveling to face Madison County. The Mountaineers won last season 26-24, ending a nearly decade long losing streak against the Dragons. The game was clouded however by disciplinary action, causing Madison County to forfeit their next game and the cancellation of the remaining athletic events during the school year between the schools.

A three-way tie atop the Jefferson District between Albemarle, Louisa County and Western Albemarle was the storyline of last season and all three figure to factor into the district title picture again. The first matchup between the three programs comes in week seven with Albemarle traveling to crosstown rivals Western Albemarle, who won last season 21-20. The Patriots will seek to end the Warriors four-game win streak in the rivalry.

Immediately following in week eight, Western Albemarle will enter "The Jungle" to face Louisa County in a matchup the Lions won 27-0 in Crozet last season. The biggest surprise of last season came with Albemarle ending Louisa County's 31-game unbeaten streak in Jefferson District game on the Patriots way to clinching a share of the Jefferson District title. The Lions will host the rematch in week 10 against the Patriots.
