NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A man has been arrested while attempting to flee the country.

According to a release, federal and local law enforcement officers arrested 49-year-old Adrian Salvatore Lewis at Washington Dulles International Airport on Tuesday morning.

He is accused of killing his wife, 35-year-old Shanita Eure-Lewis, who was reported missing on Sunday to the Newport News Police Department.

Lewis was escorted from the airport by Homeland Security Investigations special agents and Newport News detectives around 4:15 a.m.

The release says Customs and Border Protection officers and HSI agencies initially met Lewis at the departure gate for a flight to Montego Bay, Jamaica on Monday.

He was wanted for questioning regarding his wife’s disappearance, so officials detained him and returned him to an inspection station at the airport.

Shortly before noon, a search of Lewis’ luggage turned up his wife’s passport and credit cards.

Lewis was arrested Tuesday afternoon on a first-degree murder charge.
