ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- People and dogs will need to stay out of the water at Chris Greene Lake.

The Albemarle County Department of Parks and Recreation reports there is a harmful algae bloom taking place.

So the lake has been closed to swimming until further notice.

Nearby hiking trails and the dog park will remain open and boating is still allowed on the lake.

At this time, there have been no reports of health issues associated with the bloom, but the decision to close the lake to swimming came after test results found harmful algae present in the water.

One such algae is called cyanobacteria, more commonly known as blue-green algae. This type of algae produces toxins that can be harmful to people and animals if ingested or it gets into open wounds in the skin.

Walnut Creek Lake is not affected.

Additionally, the county says lifeguards that would normally work at Chris Greene Lake will be at Mint Springs this Thursday through Sunday instead.
