Seeking information on sudden closure of rural post office
ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger wants to know why a local post office was abruptly closed.
According to a release, she has heard from Virginians who are having issues accessing mail and packages after the Montpelier Station Post Office suddenly shut down.
Spanberger sent a letter to the U.S. Postal Service on Thursday calling for an explanation concerning the Orange County post office.
The release says she outlined the impacts the closure has had on people in the area around Montpelier Station in the letter to USPS Virginia District Manager Gerald Roane.
Spanberger says she wants to know why the post office was closed without prior notice and the justification behind the decision to close it among other issues.
“Unfortunately, many constituents have contacted my office to report the abrupt closure of the Montpelier Station Post Office in Orange County, Virginia on June 1, 2022,” she said.
“Due to its location in a rural community, the Montpelier Station Post Office serves nearly 100 customers by P.O. box only.
Neither my constituents nor local officials were given any prior notice of the closure, and the only information they were provided after service had already been discontinued was that their mail would be held behind the counter at the Orange County post office where they must now pick it up in-person during regular business hours.”

The post office closed on June 1.
