ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday night in Rockingham County.

According to police, the crash occurred around 9:25 p.m. at the intersection of Harpine Highway and Buttermilk Creek Road.

A 1997 Mercury Villager heading west on Buttermilk Creek Road stopped at a stop sign and then tried to turn left onto Harpine Highway.

The Mercury hit a northbound 2008 BMW 3281 that was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The driver of the Mercury, identified as 71-year-old Gerald L. Will of Hinton, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Sentara RMH Medical Center. He later died of his injuries.

A passenger in the Mercury, 78-year-old Jean E. Will of Hinton, also suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center.

The driver of the BMW, a 17-year-old male from Harrisonburg, and a passenger, a 17-year-old male from Rockingham County, both suffered minor injuries.

They were treated at Sentara RMH.

Police say all four people were wearing seat belts.

The BMW driver has been charged with driving under the influence.
