CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) --Fall camp means seeing more unfamiliar faces, with kickoff just under a month away we check in on depth on the defense.

The cavaliers have said goodbye to veterans like Joey Blount, Devante Cross, and Nick Grant, but despite this, the defensive backs room still has some experience, returning guys like Antonio Clary, Anthony Johnson, and Darrius Bratton. Not to be overlooked though, is sophomore Jonas Sanker.

The Charlottesville native appeared in 9 games last year. An injury sidelined him in the spring and into the summer but Sanker is poised to make a return next week. Both Sanker and Coach Cox are confident he'll prove himself vital in this new Virginia defense.

"College football is college football but ya know," said Sanker, "I don't really like to compare the two but the one thing I've enjoyed from this new staff is with a new staff every guy gets the chance to show who they are shown what they can do and I think that's always really cool for you know everybody on the team to show who they are regardless of how old you are how good you are, everyone has to you know, show their best self."

"I think for him just staying healthy," said Coach Cox, "You know with all injuries it's just how much confidence can I get from it? and I think once he gets out there and it's it under his belt, makes that first hit and gets those pads a little lose he'll be good to go, he was a guy who, previously as a young guy did get in there so he's kinda gone that experience whether the year or how many reps he got he so it's more so for him it's just getting confident and learning how we practice even though he didn't take the live reps  in the scrimmage he got just as many reps as the other guys he didn't get a chance to tackle."
