Remembering the Unite the Right rally
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- On Thursday, people from around Charlottesville gathered near the University of Virginia Chapel to take a moment and remember what happened in the city five years ago.
It was an emotional day on UVA Grounds as they remembered the events of the torch march and the Unite the Right rally.
“At noon today, there was a moment of silence and then the ringing of the UVA Chapel bells in honor of the fifth anniversary of the Aug. 11 and 12 [2017] situation that happened here in Charlottesville. The symbolic value of the bells allows for time to reflect and recognize what happened,” said Matt Weber, the chief creative officer of UVA President Jim Ryan.
Throughout the weekend, there will be other events marking the anniversary of those events.
