CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Charlottesville Police Department has released a little more information regarding an incident that occurred on Elliott Avenue on Thursday evening.

According to police, the Emergency Communications Center was advised around 4:20 p.m. that an officer was with a wanted person with whom he was familiar.

The officer spoke with the suspect for a few moments, and then the suspect drove off at a high rate of speed before he could be arrested.

The suspect hit several other vehicles as he tried to drive away.

Other officers responded to the area, spotting the suspect’s vehicle on a nearby street.

As they approached the vehicle, the suspect displayed a firearm and then a single shot was fired inside the vehicle.

When officers inspected the vehicle, they found the occupant had a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and they immediately called for emergency personnel while attempting life-saving measures.

Emergency medical personnel got to the scene, but they declared the suspect dead.

Police say this is considered an isolated incident with no threat to the community.

Part of Elliott Avenue and other nearby roads were closed for a few hours Thursday because of this incident.
