Pilot killed in Albemarle County crash identified
RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Officials have released the identity of a person who was killed in an Albemarle County plane crash last week.
According to the Virginia State Police, the pilot was 30-year-old Kevin J. Esh of New Holland, Pennsylvania.
The crash occurred Sept. 14 around 11:30 p.m. when a distress call was received from the pilot.
Efforts were made to get him to Charlottesville Albemarle Airport for a safe landing, but the single-engine aircraft was not able to make it.
It crashed into a wooded area near Plank Road and Stillhouse Creek Road and then caught fire.
On Monday, the Office of the Medical Examiner told police it had identified the pilot, who was the plane’s only occupant.
VSP says the Piper fixed-wing aircraft had taken off from Blue Ridge Regional Airport in Martinsville and was headed to Pennsylvania at the time.
The National Transportation Safety Board is now in charge of the investigation.
