RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Dominion Energy is celebrating the anniversary of its EnergyShare program.

Because the program started in 1982, the power company is providing free energy efficiency upgrades to 40 homes in 40 days.

According to a release, projects can also include home repairs and special needs to improve safety and comfort for the resident.

“Our mission is to serve our customers and communities,” said Ed Baine, President of Dominion Energy Virginia. “We are committed to not only delivering safe, reliable and affordable energy to our customers but providing a helping hand when they need it most. We are proud to dedicate $13 million each year to EnergyShare and make a difference in our customers’ lives.”

EnergyShare is a year-round program offering assistance to customers in the most need. Since its inception, the program has helped more than 895,000 customers.

Dominion expanded the scope of the program in 2015 when it pledged $57 million for it, which has helped more than 121,000 Virginians get bill payment assistance and weatherization services. This includes more than 8,800 military veterans and their families.

EnergyShare was expanded again in 2018 as part of the Grid Transformation and Security Act, which committed $130 million to it through 2028.

One of the homes that will get free weatherization assistance is in Crozet.
